During a seven week course between April to June 2013, respiratory therapists from NICU had the opportunity to undergo an up skilling education course delivered by Ms. Sophon Kang, a Respiratory Therapist from SickKids, Canada.
This was a great learning opportunity for the RTs to refresh old skills, whilst gaining new knowledge. There was an impressive 100 percent attendance to the course and overall the NICU RTs felt satisfied with the course and outcome.

After the course, RTs have experienced a great boost in their confidence and have become more expressive of their thoughts and ideas in front of fellow colleagues, doctors and patients. NICU doctors have also noticed a positive change in therapists and are more confident to trust the therapist’s opinions regarding patient care. Practice is evolving in the unit, and this training has allowed RTs to be an integral part of the implementation of necessary changes, whilst increasing their interactive experience in the unit.
Speaking to Mr. Gayson C. Pastoral, who attended and thoroughly enjoyed the course, he believes that, ‘’Implementation of change is evident within the roots of the unit, and can further heighten in baby steps. However, I have noticed that, after the RT training, our doctors have become more confident with RTs taking required decisions in patient care. I believe these types of education are vital for our personal and professional development, and would encourage HMC/Sickkids Partnership to continue delivering education and training opportunities to inform us about the latest concepts to help us deliver first class care to our patients.’’
